THE strong blow pipe team from the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) scored a big success at the International Borneo Sumpit Tournament (IBOST2011) in Singkawang West Kalimantan Indonesia last week.
Indeed,Nov 20, 2011is a date to be remembered for the SDNU team members as they were then declared the overall champion in the three-day tournament which started on November 18.
The SDNU team dominated seven of the eight international categories for both men and women. The other Malaysian team in the tournament was Kelab Menyumpit Julau but it did not make much of an impact.
The inuagural IBOST 2011 was organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Indonesia.
The SDNU group, led by team coordinator and SDNU vice-president Anthony Banyan, left Kuching for Singkawang in the early morning of November 17, brimming with confidence.
Apart from Anthony, the SDNU team officials comprised Langkasty Narang and Edmund Renggie. The men’s team consisted of Gordon Mingan, Sangat alias Bong Chon Khui, Johnsin Bong, Poria Abun, Hunter Mille, Meli Tintang, Nelson George and Tommy Jintang while Inda Ahoi, Tara Ahoi, Lengidi Neru and Benone Akim made up the women’s team.
“This is the first time SDNU had taken part in such a tournament at the international level. As contingent leader, Anthony Banyan, on behalf of SDNU, would like to thank Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Senior Minister and Social Development Minister, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Kapit Member of Parliament and Datuk Aaron Dagang, Kanowit Member of Parliament, for their support and donations,” SDNU said in a statement.
Local Indonesian newspapers carried “feel good” articles to reflect the SDNU team’s creditable showing.
The Tribune Pontianak’s headline “Singkawang Akui Sarawak Hebat” (Singkawang recognisedSarawak’s prowess) in its November 20 edition and another headine “Malaysia Mendominasi” (Malaysiadominates) on the same day in the Pontianak Post said it all.
On the eve of their departure to Singkawang, Anthony disclosed that the Walikota Singkawang only invited potential competitors through SDNU.
“As the SDNU team is the only one fromMalaysia, we can say the team is a national team,” he said at the time.
He added that some of the team members were husbands and wives.
“Although the cash prizes were attractive, SDNU took part primarily to foster closer relationships between the Dayak communities inSarawakandKalimantan.
“Moreover, blowpipe is one of the Dayak traditional sports and it is appropriate to keep the sport alive,” he added.
Kelab Menyumpit Julau was represented by Meluda Langau, Ngelai Ukin, Imba Leo and Sophia Tunjin.
Anthony is also an event coordinator of the much-awaited Third Borneo Dayak Cultural Heritage Safari (BDCHS) from today (November 27) to December 4.
The safari will cover the places of interest such as Sanggau, Sintang, Landak, Singkawang and Pontianak (Kalimantan Barat) and Tebedu (Sarawak).
The BDCHS is another SDNU major activity in collaboration with Social Development Ministry and comes under the G-to-G cooperation or SOSEK MALINDO framework.
